The Challenge

This Greenbrook home has the kind of architecture that makes Los Alamitos living rooms feel twice their size: a vaulted ceiling with a window bank that follows the roofline, and a two-story entry with a transom window set high above the front doors.
The same features that make the rooms bright make them hard to cover. The upper windows aren’t rectangles: they rake with the ceiling, so each opening has a different angle and height. Stock blinds and off-the-shelf shutters simply don’t come in those shapes. And the entry transom sits far above the doors, which means afternoon sun and glare pouring into the living space with no practical way to control it. You can’t exactly reach up and adjust a shade twenty feet off the floor.
The homeowner wanted light control and privacy without giving up the character of the windows, and a finished look that matched the home’s clean, coastal style.

Precision measurement of every opening
Each rake-top window was measured individually, angle and all, so every custom panel would follow the ceiling line exactly rather than approximating it.
Custom fabrication
The shutters were built to those measurements: a four-panel main bank with a matching four-panel rake-top section for the living room, and a two-panel unit for the high entry transom.
In-house installation
Our own installers, never subcontractors, handled the full install, including the work at height in the two-story entry, and aligned the louvers and frames across both tiers for one continuous, built-in look.

The Result

Because the rake-top panels were cut to the true angle of each opening, the shutters look original to the architecture: clean lines, matched frames, and louvers that align across the upper and lower banks. The entry transom, once the least controllable window in the house, now filters the harshest sun while keeping the entry bright and welcoming.
