Custom Window Shutters Designed for Orange County Homes

Window shutters are framed interior panels with adjustable louvers that mount directly to the window opening. Unlike blinds and shades, they do not lift or roll. They open on hinges or slide on a track, and they stay on the window as part of the room. That makes shutters the most permanent, most architectural window treatment you can put in an Orange County home.

They also handle local conditions well. Strong afternoon sun in inland cities like Tustin, Orange, and Santa Ana calls for light control you can adjust by the hour. Salt air and humidity in Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, and Laguna Beach call for materials that resist warping and fading. Close neighbors in Fountain Valley, Stanton, and Los Alamitos call for privacy that does not shut out daylight. Shutters handle all three with one tilt of the louvers.

California Shade builds every shutter to the exact size of your window, measured on-site by our team and installed by the same in-house crew. Our shutter collection covers interior shutters, not the decorative exterior shutters that hang beside a window.

Explore Our Custom Shutter Collection

Four shutter types. Each one fits a different room, budget, and look. Here is what each option does and where it works best in Orange County homes.

Plantation Shutters: Plantation shutters are the style most homeowners picture: wide louvers in a solid frame that tilt open for light and close for privacy. They come in composite, real wood, and vinyl, with a choice of louver sizes, frames, and tilt options for every window. They are the most requested shutter in Orange County, popular in Irvine, Tustin, and Orange homes with tall windows and open living spaces.

Real Wood Shutters: Real wood shutters use natural hardwood, the lightest shutter material and the only one that takes a true stain. They suit traditional, craftsman, and Spanish-style homes in Orange, Yorba Linda, and Newport Beach where floors and trim already show natural wood. They work best in living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms. For bathrooms and beachside windows, a moisture-resistant material performs better.

Composite Shutters: Composite shutters, often called faux wood shutters, use an engineered material that resists moisture, warping, and UV fading while keeping the look of a painted wood shutter. They are the practical all-round choice for whole-home projects and coastal properties in Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, and Laguna Beach where salt air and sun are hard on natural wood.

Vinyl Shutters: Vinyl shutters, also called PVC shutters, are the most moisture-resistant option and one of the more cost-conscious ways to shutter several windows at once. They are built for kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms where steam and splashes hit the window every day. Many homeowners pair vinyl in wet rooms with wood or composite in living areas.

Across the collection, you can choose the styles Orange County homes need most: café-style shutters for street-level privacy, bypass shutters and shutter doors for sliding glass doors and French doors, hidden tilt for a clean modern louver face, split tilt for separate top and bottom control, and custom arched, angled, and bay window shutters.

How to Choose the Right Shutters for Your Home

The right shutter depends on four things: the room it goes in, the louver size, the window or door type, and the depth of the window opening. Here is how to work through each one.

Match the material to the room

Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and home offices are where real wood looks its best. Kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms need vinyl or composite, which handle steam and daily wiping. Coastal homes close to the beach get the longest life from composite or vinyl, since salt air and humidity are harder on natural wood. Many Orange County homes use two materials matched by room, with the same louver size and color so the whole house still reads as one design.

Choose the louver size

Louver size sets the look and the view. Wider louvers, such as 3.5-inch and 4.5-inch, mean fewer slats, a wider view when open, and a cleaner modern look on large windows and tall openings. Narrower 2.5-inch louvers suit smaller windows and traditional rooms, and they fit shallow window openings where wider louvers might hit the glass or the window crank when tilted.

Pick the panel configuration for the opening

Standard windows take hinged panels that swing open for cleaning and full views. Sliding glass doors and wide openings take bypass panels that slide on a track. French doors take shutter panels mounted to each door. Café-style panels cover only the bottom half of the window for privacy with an open top. Arches, angles, and bay windows are built as custom shapes fitted to each pane.

Inside mount vs. outside mount

Inside-mount shutters sit within the window opening for a recessed, built-in look, which needs enough depth for the frame and louver clearance. Outside-mount frames attach to the wall or trim around the opening. They are the right choice when the opening is shallow, out of square, or crowded by tile, crank handles, or alarm sensors. Our team checks depth and squareness on every window during the in-home measurement visit at no charge.

Why Professional Shutter Installation Matters in Southern California

Shutters fail at the measurement and planning stage far more often than at the product stage. A frame built slightly too wide will not fit the opening. A frame built too narrow leaves light gaps and panels that do not close flush. Louvers sized without checking window depth can hit the glass or the window hardware when tilted.

Orange County homes make that harder. Older homes in Orange, Santa Ana, and Tustin often have openings that are out of square. Newer tract homes in Irvine and Aliso Viejo have shallow returns and wide sliding doors. Custom homes in Newport Beach and Laguna Beach add arches, angles, and tall windows that need custom shapes.

California Shade measures every window before your order is placed and confirms mount type, frame style, louver clearance, and panel layout on-site. When your shutters arrive, our in-house team installs, levels, and aligns every panel and adjusts each louver before we leave. Every installation is backed by our lifetime warranty on most products and our price match guarantee.

Fantastic experience from quote to install. Their customer service is unmatched and even the products they had available to choose were better quality/more to choose from. The install team was fast and professional and we love how it all turned out. Will be going back to them for all future shade related needs and will recommend to anyone in need. Blew the big name companies out of the water.

Paulo, Kenny, and Gerardo were nothing short of amazing. From beginning to end, communication was top notch. Kenny and Paulo came out to patiently walk us through the quote process – answer all of our questions, accommodating our requested modifications, and applying zero pressure to purchase. They really made us feel comfortable during every step of the way. Communication throughout the holidays was prompt and effective, and the ensuing installation was a breeze. The installation was fast, efficient, clean, and hassle-free. We are extremely happy with the shades and the experience overall, and would not hesitate to recommend California Shades to anyone at all.

Right from the start, Kenny was amazing! I try to keep a very clean home and when Kenny saw I didn’t wear shoes in my home he asked if he should remove his, which I really appreciated. That just showed me immediately that he was caring and considerate towards his customers. He showed me samples of blinds, gave great suggestions, and took window measurements. He was very understanding, easy to talk to, and went above and beyond to get me a good deal. Throughout the whole process, Kenny was always available to answer any questions I had and always responded right away from start to finish. Geraldo did a great job installing the blinds. He was fast, clean and meticulous. How he did it so quickly while installing them straight just shows he has lots of experience. Kenny helped assist and move furniture, cleaned and tested the blinds and made sure everything went smoothly. I was recovering from a third surgery so I was worried about furniture being in the way. They moved everything and after moved it back. They made the installation process so easy for me and they worked well together. I would definitely recommend California Shade. They said that even after installation, if anything goes wrong I can contact them in the future, which shows that they aren’t just about the sale, but that they care about their customers. Definitely deserve 5 stars!

Paul came over to my house and was super knowledgeable about different types of shades/shutters that worked well in my house. He came with lots of samples and showed us what worked well in each room. He is super friendly. Family owned business. Ordered everything and as promised 4-6 weeks later we got our order. His 2 installers came on time as scheduled and installed everything. Damon and Gerardo installed everything professionally and cleaned up everything once they were done. Look no further and support local.

Service Areas

Proudly Serving Orange County, Greater LA, and San Bernardino

From Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach on the coast to Orange, Tustin, and Aliso Viejo inland, California Shade measures and installs custom window shutters in homes across Orange County, Greater LA, and San Bernardino County.

Common Questions

Good questions. Real answers.

California Shade installs four types of custom interior shutters: plantation shutters, real wood shutters, composite shutters, and vinyl shutters. Each is available in styles such as café-style, hidden tilt, split tilt, bypass shutters for sliding doors, and custom shapes for arched and bay windows.

Plantation shutters are a style defined by wide louvers set in a solid frame. Wood, composite, and vinyl are materials, and each can be built as a plantation shutter. Most interior shutters installed in Orange County homes today are plantation-style. Learn more on our plantation shutters page.

Composite and vinyl shutters perform best in coastal cities like Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, and Laguna Beach because they resist moisture, salt air, warping, and UV fading. Real wood works well in living areas set back from the coast and in rooms without steam or humidity.

Choose shutters if you want a permanent, built-in look, no cords, and a window treatment that holds its finish for years. Choose blinds if you want a lower upfront cost, a lighter look, or a covering that lifts fully off the window. Many homes use shutters in main living areas and blinds in secondary rooms.

Yes. Sliding glass doors take bypass shutters, which are panels that slide on a track so the door opens freely. French doors take shutter panels mounted to each door. We confirm door clearance and handle placement during the measurement visit.

Our shutter collection covers interior shutters that mount inside or around the window opening, not the decorative exterior shutters that hang beside a window. For outdoor sun and privacy control, see our exterior drop shades, awnings, and patio covers.

Shutter pricing depends on the material, the number and size of windows, louver size, frame style, and any specialty shapes or sliding door panels. You get exact pricing in a same-visit quote during your free in-home consultation, and our price match guarantee applies to verified competitor quotes.

Most shutter projects install in a single visit once the custom shutters arrive. Our in-house team mounts, levels, and aligns every panel and adjusts the louvers before leaving, so the shutters are ready to use the same day.
